Shadow Volume

A shadow volume is a construct used raytracing and raycasting, to speed the process somewhat, by simplifying the process of beam tracking. It is essentially a volumetric object - a polygon which does not interact with other polygons in collision detection routines, although it may be attached to one or more. Any light that passes through the volume is automatically reduced by a set amount, creating areas that are always in shadow. This is often useful for dramatic effect.

Virtual Voice: Artificial Larynx
The larynx, or voicebox is the organ responsible for much of the production of soundwaves that become speech. Sound itself is generated in the larynx, and the pitch and volume of the resultant sounds are controlled there. In addition, the force the air is expelled from the lungs, adds to volume. Without a larynx, any form of speech is not possible.

This ten year old book, is a bit behind current advances, but is by no means behind the times. If anything, the changes since 1999, have only emphasised the points made in this volume, not diminished them. It argues that we are entering a virtual age, an age where information, minds themselves, are becoming divorced from their physical bodies.
